The aim of this activity is to provide a context and concept for solutions to simultaneous equations. Students start by exploring a table of values using their calculator and work towards solving the equations simultaneously (by hand).

About the Lesson

Students solve simultaneous equations numerically and algebraically. The calculator is used to generate a table of values for two different transportation fares: taxis and ride-share. The table of values clearly shows which form of transport is cheaper at each distance. Students verify the observed values using algebra.
