Peter McLaren

Peter McLaren is the Director and Founder of Next Gen Education, LLC, and works as a consultant with states and districts in support of the implementation of the state science standards based on “Framework for K–12 Science Education” (NRC, 2012). In his previous work, McLaren served in a number of roles in the area of science education policy, including Director of the State and District Support for Science at Achieve, Inc., and Science and Technology Specialist at the Rhode Island Department of Education. He also served as President of the Council of State Science Supervisors (CSSS) from July 2010 until April 2013.
McLaren was a member of the national writing committee for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). He has also served on a number of committees including the National Academy of Engineering’s “Guiding Implementation of K–12 Engineering Education” committee, and the National Academy of Science’s Committee for “Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards” (NRC, 2014), and was a contributor to the NRC publication “Seeing Students Learn Science” (NRC, 2017). An award-winning educator, McLaren was a teacher of science for 13 years at both the high school and middle school level. In 2001, he was recognized with the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award and in 1995 as the Rhode Island Science Teacher of the Year by the MIT-sponsored Network of Educators of Science and Technology. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in science education from the University of Rhode Island. Back to event details
Mary Pittman, Ph. D.

Mary Pittman began her career as a middle school mathematics teacher in St. Cloud, Minnesota, before moving to Colorado to work on her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Boulder. After completing her doctoral studies, Pittman became the Director of Mathematics for Boulder Valley School District before moving to the Colorado Department of Education as their PK–12 Mathematics Specialist. Currently, Pittman is a Director for TNTP. She became President of the Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics in June of 2021, after serving on the board as a regional representative. In 2020, Pittman was awarded the State Leadership Service Award in Mathematics from the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics, and in 2016 the Floyd G. Hudson Service Award from the Council for Learning Disabilities. Pittman is passionate about supporting the development of high quality mathematics teachers and leaders. Back to event details
Tammy Baumann, Ph. D.

Mathematics Content Director at NWEA
Tammy Baumann is a Mathematics Content Director, focusing on content quality and alignment initiatives in mathematics. She recently joined NWEA after being part of the team at Open Up Resources, Michigan State University and several local school districts. She brings over 20 years of experience in K–12 education, serving as a teacher, instructional coach, building administration and curriculum director. Much of her career has focused on supporting instruction and assessment practices within the math classroom.
A strategic thinker, Baumann has developed product strategy, expanded the portfolio of organizational partnerships, and designed and implemented quality assurance processes. Her experience includes building teams of curriculum and professional learning as well as supporting leadership growth. As a consultant, Baumann has had the opportunity to serve at the local, state and national level as a committee member, panelist or chairman for organizations such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, U.S. Department of Education, NAEP, Achieve, and Pennsylvania Department of Education. She earned a doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a focus on the impact of instructional decisions in the elementary mathematics classroom. Back to event details
Ted Coe, Ph. D.

Director of Content Advocacy and Design at NWEA
With over 25 years of experience as a teacher, professor, department chair, administrator, and nonprofit director, Ted Coe uses his experiences to weave together thought-provoking perspectives in mathematics education. He is energetic and passionate about mathematics teaching and learning and has worked full time as a high school mathematics teacher, a community college faculty member, the mathematics chair at two community colleges, as an assistant dean at the university level, and as Director of Mathematics at Achieve. As NWEA’s Director of Content Advocacy and Design, Coe works to promote high-quality mathematical experiences for all. His work entails advocating for mathematics both within NWEA and around the nation. Coe earned his B.A.E., M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees from Arizona State University, each with a focus on mathematics education. Back to event details
