Peter McLaren

Next Gen Education, LLC
Peter McLaren is the Director and Founder of Next Gen Education, LLC, and works as a consultant with states and districts in support of the implementation of the state science standards. McLaren was a member of the national writing committee for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In his previous work, he served in a number of roles in the area of science education policy, including Director of the State and District Support for Science at Achieve, Inc. and Science and Technology Specialist at the Rhode Island Department of Education.
An award-winning educator, McLaren was a teacher of science for 13 years at both the high school and middle school level. In 2001, he was recognized with the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award and in 1995 as the Rhode Island Science Teacher of the Year by the MIT-sponsored Network of Educators of Science and Technology. He holds both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Education degrees from the University of Rhode Island. Back to event details

As ITEEA Executive Director and CEO, Steve Barbato brings over four decades of educational experiences as a teacher, State Supervisor for Technology Education (Delaware), educational consultant, and school district administrator with an emphasis on pre-K–12 STEM integration. He focuses on supporting ITEEA’s mission to advance technological and engineering understanding and capabilities for all students pre-K–12. Matt Davis has spent 28 years in education and has been involved in curriculum development for Carroll County Public Schools. He is currently teaching exploring computer science, AP® Computer Science Principles, AP® Computer Science A and advanced topics in computer science. Davis has been an ExCITE Lead Teacher, developing robotic activities for AP® Computer Science Principles and providing professional development and support to teachers who are new to AP® Computer Science Principles. He most recently was honored with the International Technology and Engineering Educator Association — Excellence in Academic Leadership award in 2021, was an Outstanding Teacher Nominee in 2021, and was given the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Employee Recognition in 2020 and 2021. Since 2018, Dan Stooks has served as a CTE education specialist where he has supported the agriculture, Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, technology education, trade and industry, and technology education programs for his district. Previously, he was a teacher for 11 years at Varina High School where he taught communication systems courses, including imaging technology, video and media technology, as well as dual-enrollment geospatial technology. Stooks earned his Bachelor of Science in technology education from Oswego State, a Master of Science in information design technology from Polytechnic Institute State, and an endorsement in educational leadership from Longwood University. The College Board®
Crystal Furman is a former AP® Computer Science (CS) teacher, who now leads the AP® CS A and AP® Computer Science Principles curriculum, in addition to instruction and assessment development for The College Board®. She has 17 years of high school classroom experience, bringing computer science alive for students in a hands-on way. Furman has been a reader and table leader at the AP® Reading and a Workshop consultant, training CS teachers for many years. Back to event details
Edward “Ted” C. McNett

Ted McNett is in his 23rd year of education, currently working as the Assistant Supervisor of Career and Technical Education at Carroll County Public Schools since 2008. He is also part of Project ExCITE, an NSF-funded partnership between Hofstra University and the ITEEA. Recently, he worked on the Maryland Computer Science Standards development team and Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Technology Completer program development.
In 2021, McNett was awarded Supervisor of the Year for the ITEEA Council for Supervision and Leadership and also received an Excellence in Academic Leadership award from the ITEEA. He also was given the ITEEA Council for Supervision and Leadership’s Technology and Engineering Outstanding Local Supervisor of the Year. He taught undergraduate and graduate level courses for University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, and McDaniel College. Back to event details
