Implementing TI-Innovator™ Rover in the Mathematics Classroom

This workshop is focused on connecting the use of TI-Innovator™ Rover in the mathematics classroom with middle and high school curriculum.

Ready-to-use activities, for enhancing student understanding of key mathematical concepts, will be explored using Rover.

Building upon the lessons from TI’s Math in Motion and 10 Minutes of Code activities, the workshop shows participants how to operate Rover using either TI-84 Plus CE or TI-Nspire™ CX graphing calculators.

By the end of the workshop, participants should be comfortable:

  • Operating Rover using prewritten programs, adapting them and designing their own
  • Connecting the code of Rover to its motion
  • Using the motion of Rover to explore topics in the mathematics curriculum
  • Applying the mathematics process standards to Rover activities

Overview

The Implementing TI-Innovator™ Rover in the Mathematics Classroom workshop is available in a one-day, in-person format using Rover with either TI-84 Plus CE or TI-Nspire™ CX technology. A half-day workshop option is also available. A virtual workshop is also available in multiple two- or three-hour sessions.

This workshop can be combined with any of the following workshops to create a multi-day workshop option:

workshop-1-day

Participants will learn to:

  • Write basic programs to have Rover pilot through various challenges
  • Connect linear equations and the design of polygons directly to Rover and its motion
  • Utilize ratios and scale to navigate on a map of Olympus Mons on Mars
  • Match the graph (motion) with Rover
  • Use two Rovers to identify and work with points of intersection and solve systems of linear equations

Areas of Focus

This workshop connects Rover to curriculum concepts. No experience on the TI-84 Plus CE or TI-Nspire™ CX graphing calculator will be required, as basic technology skills will be covered as they are needed.

Subject Topics
Rates of Change (Distance/Time)
How to calculate and understand various rates of change and velocity
